10월이 되고 처음으로 고개를 멀리 들어본 날이었다.
평소에도 건물을 보다가 하늘을 보곤 했을 텐데, 오늘은 하늘이 먼저 눈에 들어왔다. 가을이라 그런가. 높아진 파란색을 따라 시선을 옮기다 보니 왼쪽의 붉은 건물과 그 옆의 현대식 회색 상자가 보였다.
서로 꽤 다른 얼굴인데 나란히 있으니 또 그럴듯하다.
어린이보호구역에 들어서며 속도를 30km로 줄였다.
차가 느려지니 마음도 따라서 느려졌다.
마침 앞 사거리의 신호가 빨간색이다.
차를 멈추고 용두동으로 좌회전할 신호를 기다린다. 조금 전까지 정면에 있던 하늘은 이제 왼쪽에 있다. 가만히 기다리다 문득 동네 이름이 눈에 걸렸다.
용두동.
용의 머리라는 뜻인가.
용이 꾸물꾸물 지나가는 동네인가.
자주 지나는 길인데 나는 왜 매번 새로운 걸 발견할까.
생각해보면 장소가 매번 새로운 게 아니라, 그날의 날씨와 빛의 색에 내가 꽤 쉽게 자극받는 사람인지도 모르겠다. 같은 길인데 흐린 날과 맑은 날이 다르고, 여름의 하늘과 10월의 하늘이 다르다.
신호가 바뀐다.
다시 집으로 가는 길.
멀리 용마산을 바라보며 달린다.
용두동을 지나 용마산으로.
또 용이네.

The Day I Finally Looked Up
It was the first day in October that I really looked up into the distance.
I must look at the sky all the time while looking at buildings, but today the sky caught my eye first. Maybe it was because autumn had arrived. Following that high stretch of blue, my gaze moved to a red building on the left and the modern gray box beside it.
They have completely different faces, yet somehow they look right standing next to each other.
As I entered a school zone, I slowed down to 30 km/h.
As the car slowed, my mind seemed to slow with it.
The traffic light at the intersection ahead turned red.
I stopped and waited for the left-turn signal toward Yongdu-dong. The sky that had been straight ahead was now off to my left. While waiting, the name of the neighborhood suddenly caught my attention.
Yongdu-dong.
Does it mean “dragon’s head”?
Or is this a neighborhood where a dragon wriggles its way through?
I take this road often, so why does it always feel new?
Maybe it isn’t the place that keeps changing. Maybe I’m simply more sensitive than I realize to the color of the weather and the light of each day. The same road feels different under clouds and under clear skies. A summer sky is not the same as an October sky.
The light changes.
I continue toward home,
driving with Yongmasan in the distance.
